Our Mission

History of the Toys For Tots program

Toys For Tots is going into its 59th year of service in 2006. The program started in 1947 in Los Angeles, Ca, by Major Bill Hendricks USMCR. His wife had made a Raggedy Ann doll and asked him to find a program that would give it to a child in need. At the time no such program existed, so his wife suggested that he start one. That year Maj. Hendricks and his Marines collected 5,000 toys and Toys for Tots was born. The following year the United States Marine Corps expands it into a national program and we have grown from there.

Today the Toys For Tots program is active in over 400 communities in all fifty states to include the District of Colombia, Puerto Rico, and American Somoa. Last year over 12.9 million toys were collected and distributed to 5.7 million needy children.
